The summit of Mt. Skåla in Loen towers 1,848 metres above sea level. In 1891, a round tower that sleeps 22 was built on the summit. It has always been a popular mountain destination. Mt. Skåla is reckoned to be Norway's highest mountain with its "foot in the sea".

Skaala Uphill 1.848 m.a.s.l. - Northern Europe's toughest mountain race takes place every year in mid August. Skaala Uphill, from 29 to 1848 metres above sea level is North Europe's toughest mountain race in terms of the difference in altitude of 1.818 metres between start and finish - and not the least with regard to the total running distance which is only 8,2 km. The average rise is 22,5 per cent! The race starts at Tjugen, 29 metres above sea level. Skaala Uphill is arranged with both competition class with individual timekeeping, and also with a fun-run class without timekeeping.
