Start your trip with a visit to the tourist office on Kongens Plass and receive a city map for your tour. Equipped with maps and information, the trip starts by walking up Langveien, passing "BYFOSSEN", and NERPARKEN - the park with statues and monuments.
Further up Langveien is KIRKELANDET CHURCH (1964), one of Norway's most unusual and modern church buildings. Close to the church is the 200-year-old listed family burial site of the Brodtkorbs.
Next is SVANEDAMMEN with all its waterbirds, before moving on to VARDEN, the lookout tower with a 360 panoramic view. From here you can see the ocean with the islands of Averøy, Grip and Smøla; you can study the whole of Kristiansund in detail, and you can see the fjord cutting into the land towards the Trollheimen and Dovre mountain ranges. Then wander on down towards Vågen with the exciting HANDELSHUSET P. VOLCKMAR Museum with café and its own coffee roasting plant (market days here on the occasional Saturday), MELLEMVERFTET Museum with veteran boats and wooden craft undergoing repairs, and NORSK KLIPPFISKMUSEUM (the Norwegian Klippfish Museum), representing the exciting history of klippfish and of Kristiansund.
Then take SUNDBÅTEN (the Sundboat harbour ferry) from Piren in front of the Town Hall, the charming little passenger boat with 130 years of experience of scheduled ferry traffic around the harbour. Why not disembark on INNLANDET for an idea of what Kristiansund was like before the bombing in 1940. Or get off the ferry on NORDLANDET to view the beautiful art nouveau church (1914) before catching the ferry back again to the town centre.
This whole trip is about 3 km long, and you can walk it (without stopping) in about 40 minutes. In addition there are the trips on the Sundbåten harbour ferry, which take about 20 minutes.
This route is marked in red on the tourist office's city map, get a map at our office, or download the brochure Kristiansund & Averøy and the map will be on page 4-5.
