Driva is Sunndal's primary river, and this was where the so-called "salmon lords" from Scotland and England could spend weeks and months enthusiastically fishing for salmon and the lively sea trout. But Sunndal has other rivers: in Litledalen they flow down from the mountains in frisky twists and turns and over small rapids. As summer draws to a close, trout fishing here is a real challenge.
Up towards the border of Trøndelag, we find Rindal, where the river Rinna flows down along the foothills of Trollheimen. Though the fjord is a long way off, the salmon find their way right up here - and so do the anglers!
Surna, the broad river that lazily flows down through Surnadal, had its origins up at Rinna. It is one of Norway's really good salmon and trout rivers, with more than 1200 salmon being caught by rod in 2004, weighing a total of nearly 4 tonnes. But Surnadal has more rivers to challenge the angler. Bøvra, Kvenna and Toåa and smaller rivers that can give anglers a good catch provided they know how to judge water levels, temperature and good weather conditions.
At Tingvoll, Tustna, Smøla and Aure there are a number of smaller rivers that only a few use for angling. Get in touch with the landowner, and you may be one of the lucky ones to fish a river all by yourself.
